Established in 1887 as a maker of sterilized surgical dressings, Johnson &
Johnson has expanded to become one of the leading medical products companies in the world. It is now a $42 billion dollar company, the 34th largest US company in the Fortune 500 and the 4th largest pharmaceutical company after Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, and Merck.

It is active in three major areas:

  • Consumer healthcare and personal care products ranging from Neutrogena skin creams to Johnson's baby powder, and from Band-Aid bandages to Splenda sugar substitute.
  • Medical devices and diagnostic tools including blood-sugar testing kits and surgical dressings.
  • Pharmaceuticals, which includes drugs for treating pain, heart problems, and cancer treatment.
