Movie screens revisited

Cinemark, one of the top movie theatre owners in the US, announced it has agreed to acquire Century Theatres, a smaller chain with over 1,000 screens in the Western USA. Terms were not disclosed, as both companies are privately held. (Cinemark was acquired by equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners in 2004 in a $1.5 billion deal.)

Cinemark, the #3 movie theater chain, currently has around 3,300 theaters across North and Latin America. The merger makes Cinemark more of a competitor with #1 Regal Entertainment (over 6,300 screens) and #2 AMC Entertainment (5,586 screens). AMC has 20% of its screens abroad, from France to Uruguay. These three companies average over 10 screens per location. The #4 exhibitor, Carmike, has around 2,500 screens. These four chains have been dominant since 2003, when we last looked at this segment. Since that time, AMC has taken over #5 Loews
