Chicken giants

US poultry company Pilgrim's Pride announced it will buy rival Gold Kist in a $1.1 billion deal. The merger will create a new #1 chicken producer in the world, beating out current leader Tyson Foods. Pilgrim's Pride is currently #2 and Gold Kist is #3.

Gold Kist sells the brands Gold Kist Farms, Early Bird, McEver's, and Medallion. It is also a pork producer and is involved in waste water management projects. Pilgrim's Pride sells under the brands Pilgrim's Pride, Pilgrim's Signature, and Country Pride. IT also sells turkeys, eggs, and some prepared foods. It has operations in the US, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

The move is yet another step in the general consolidation of the US meat market. Chicken vendors will now consist of three major ones, Pilgrim's Pride, Tyson, and Perdue.
