Record year for deals in 2007

While the mortgage/credit crisis seemed to cool off the frenzied M &
A market during the last half of 2007, the year still ended up with record deals, both in the US and the world. In the US, That's according to Thompson Financial as quoted in the New York Times ("M&A Deals Hit Record $1.57 Trillion in 2007', 12/21/07).

US deals for the year (and we still have a few days to go) were at $1.57 trillion up 5.5 percent from 2006, itself a record year. Worldwide, mergers and acquisitions reached $4.38 trillion in 2007 21 percent more than in from 2006.

While US deals slowed radically in the last month so the 2007, global sales continued at a strong pace. And, of course, the takeover of US firms is heating up, in light of the low dollar. Another key trend was the re-emergences of the strategic buyer, as private equity buyers (at least to a little extent) tended to have a little harder time getting money.
